DAD and THREE HEARTFELT WISHES

Dad,
it’s your day
And I’m thinking about you
I WISH I HAD THANKED YOU MORE.
You worked hard to provide
and you did a good job.
At the time I didn’t realize
what an effort it took to work
day in and day out to make sure
we had the things we needed.
I appreciate your many years of hard work.
And I now realize that in your own way
you were always in my corner.
It would have been so simple
to say “thank you” more often.
I WISH I HAD ASKED YOU MORE QUESTIONS.
There are so many things
I don’t really know about you.
Little things about your childhood,
your interests, your dreams, you hopes,
all the stories you could have shared.
I regret not seeking to know you better.
What a loss.
I WISH I HAD SAID “I LOVE YOU” MORE.
Three small, simple words, but when
spoken from the heart mean so much.
Yes, you made mistakes but I now realize
you were human like the rest of us.
I know you never showed it or requested it,
but down deep I’m sure you would have appreciated
me giving you a hug and hearing me say,
”I love you, dad.”
Why do we make simple things so complicated?
Why is it sometimes so hard to say what we feel?
Anyway, it’s your day, dad, and I’m thinking about you.
And it’s a bit late, but for what it’s worth,
I LOVE YOU, DAD.”

  1. This beautiful heartfelt tribute to Grandpa genuinely stirred some deep emotions in me Dad, and it reminded me of the undeclared race we run with time. Life can easily grow routine at times and cause us to shuffle through the day on auto-pilot and forget to really feel. Your blog has been helpful in stoking a core emotion to jump start my days. I too loved Grandpa and appreciate your thoughts, and since I am able, I want to say thank YOU for all your hard work and the sacrifices you made for me and our family. I want to ask you so many questions as well but for the appropriateness of this space I will simply close with I love you more than words and Happy Father’s Day! xx
