ANAM CARA is a beautiful ancient Celtic phrase which loosely translates as ”SOULMATE.” ANAM is the Irish Gaelic word for SOUL. CARA is the Irish Gaelic word for FRIEND. Thus, the literal meaning is ”SOUL FRIEND.” This is a very special relationship between two people, such as lover, friend, family member, teacher, or spiritual guide. ANAM CARA is a Celtic philosophy and Irish belief that two souls with this unique relationship are stronger together than they are apart. ”Two are better than one.” An ANAM CARA is the SOULMATE with whom you can share your deepest hopes and dreams and the intimacies of your life. When you are blessed with an ANAM CARA, you have arrived at a most sacred place, a sense of belonging, a sense of home. It is with your ANAM CARA that you feel fully understood and seen as you really are. It is with your ANAM CARA that your life feels complete. The Celtic ideal is for every person to be blessed with this beautiful relationship, an ANAM CARA - SOULMATE. May you be so blessed.
(I was introduced to this concept by a friend. John O’Donohoue wrote a whole book on the topic.)
Great post! And thank you for performing the ceremony that united me in marriage with my ANAM CARA.
