HOW TO JUMP-START YOUR DAY AND HAVE A POSITIVE OUTLOOK ON LIFE

Sometimes we can feela little dull in the morning, maybe even a little bit down, and we need somethingto jump-start our day, something to get us going, something to perk us up,something that will give us apositive start to our day andkeep us feeling positive all day. Here’s a tip that works for me.Look around you for just one small thingthat reminds you of something positive. It could be a photo or a book you’ve read.It could be a small gift that someone gave you,or a note in a card that someone sent you,it could even be a ring on your finger. The key is to look … Continue reading HOW TO JUMP-START YOUR DAY AND HAVE A POSITIVE OUTLOOK ON LIFE

HOW SEEDS TAUGHT ME A MUCH NEEDED LESSON

There’s a little spot at the cornerof our flower gardenthat I thought would be a perfectlocation for a zucchini plant. It would have lots of roomto happily sprawl as it wished.I planted two seeds and gently tapped the soilas though to bless the potentialthat was now beneath the surface. Each morning, with coffee in hand,I walk the flower garden to enjoy the blooms and birds. Each morning, after“the planting,”I stopped to see if the seeds had emerged.Nothing.Morning after morning I stopped.Nothing.I went back and read the seed packet. Those seeds should have germinated by now.”Should have.”I blamed bad seeds….I had been given duds.I blamed the birds. They must … Continue reading HOW SEEDS TAUGHT ME A MUCH NEEDED LESSON

WHAT ROSEMARY GAVE TO ME TO BRIGHTEN MY DAY

SOME DAYS BRING HEAVINESS. And it’s easy to let my attitude whirl out of whack and turn negative. But……oh….. What an early morning walk in the garden will do to brighten my day. Rosemary is there to greet me. I touch her gently and she responds with a gift of sweet aroma so fresh and fragrant that I can’t help but be grateful for such a blessing… for such a friend in the garden. Rosemary reminds me of how blessed I am…. and my attitude changes. I breathe in the frangrance, pause and reflect, and say to myself… May I … Continue reading WHAT ROSEMARY GAVE TO ME TO BRIGHTEN MY DAY

THE ART OF BENDING WITHOUT BREAKING

I have an orange tree in my yard. It’s a lesson in life to behold. I watch the miracle of blossoms give birth to oranges. And then I watch the oranges grow larger and larger, heavier and heavier, causing the branches to bend under the increasing weight. Storms come and the winds blow, the boughs swing and sway, the boughs bend and bounce, but the boughs do not break. Those tiny branches have been created to somehow have enough strength to withstand the storms that come and the weight of the oranges and make it through to face another day. … Continue reading THE ART OF BENDING WITHOUT BREAKING

OH THE JOY THE BLACK-EYED SUSANS BRING

My black-eyed susans took a lot of care all summer, cultivating, nurturing, watering, pruning— a lot of work for me, the gardener— whose old knees don’t bend so easily anymore. But oh such JOY those black-eyed susan’s brought me all summer long — their bright yellow faces and dark brown eyes made me smile each time I was in their presence. But now as Autumn creeps in I look at these once beautiful flowers and see that they are fast fading and will soon be gone. As I sit on my garden bench, I ponder. I could easily focus on … Continue reading OH THE JOY THE BLACK-EYED SUSANS BRING

PARABLE OF THE SHOVEL

There once was a man whose shovel was missing. He looked everywhere for it, but it was not to be found. Someone stole it, he thought.. He suspected the boy next door. Afer all, he looked like a thief. He talked like a thief. He even walked like a thief. Several weeks went by and the man’s dislike for the boy grew. Then one day he found his shovel. It was under a shrub where he had laid it while working in his garden. The next morning he saw the boy as he was leaving for the day. The man … Continue reading PARABLE OF THE SHOVEL
