PARABLE OF THE KING AND THE LITTLE BOY

There was once a king who decided to take a tour of his kingdom. It was a long arduous journey.  The roads were rough and bumpy and the king complained about the uncomfortable ride and the fact that it hurt his feet when he got out and walked on the roads.     Upon his return to the palace the king sent out a decree that ordered the countrymen to kill their domestic animals and cover the roads with leather to make them softer for travel and for walking.  This caused an uproar in the country.  People said it would … Continue reading PARABLE OF THE KING AND THE LITTLE BOY

AN AFRICAN PARABLE: INSIGHTS AND APPLICATION

TEN “DEADLY SINS” THAT CAN DESTROY A RELATIONSHIP

Over the years there have been many lists of “the seven deadly sins,” including one popular version by Ashley Cooper. Below is another version, only there are ten on this list instead of seven.  Each item on the list is POSITIVE in nature but, if used inappropriately, can destroy a relationship. TEN “DEADLY SINS” THAT CAN DESTROY A RELATIONSHIP TRUTH — if it is used to hurt others. TOLERANCE — if it leads to apathy. LOYALTY — if it becomes blind obedience. LOVE — if it is given with conditions that have to be met. FAITH — if it becomes divisive. … Continue reading TEN “DEADLY SINS” THAT CAN DESTROY A RELATIONSHIP

PARABLE OF THE GIRL NOBODY WANTED

In one of the border skirmishes that the Russians had with the Ukrainians, little six-year old Anna‘s parents were killed and she was placed in an orphanage. Americans often visited the Ukraine to find children to adopt.  On this one occasion, a group of American couples were at the orphanage talking to the children, hoping to discover at least one child that would appeal to them, one they could adopt and love and take home to America. Anna was never chosen when the Americans came.  Perhaps it was partly her unkempt appearance.  Perhaps it was partly the smudges on her … Continue reading PARABLE OF THE GIRL NOBODY WANTED

WHAT HAPPENS “IN BETWEEN” HELLO AND GOODBYE IS IMPORTANT

The older I get, the harder it is to say goodbye to the people I love. Yet I try to be realistic. Time may last forever but LIfe does not. All we have to work with and enjoy is “in between” HELLO and GOODBYE. It’s what we do with the “in between” that counts and where our focus should be. It’s the “in between” that makes us feel fortunate to have had the OPPORTUNITY to LOVE someone who is hard to say GOODBYE to. Though the distance  “in between” may be close or far away, OPPORTUNITY allows us to DO … Continue reading WHAT HAPPENS “IN BETWEEN” HELLO AND GOODBYE IS IMPORTANT

TO CONTRIBUTE OR NOT CONTRIBUTE TO LIFE?

I know I’m not REQUIRED to contribute, but as I meander down the winding path of LIFE, I can’t help but wonder if I have made a CONTRIBUTION. LIFE has given me so much. Have I given anything back? It has been said that “we make a life by what we give.” I can’t help but wonder what kind of LIFE I have made. What have I GIVEN? It’s also been said that ”the quality of your life is determined by the quality of your CONTRIBUTION.” I wonder what the quality of my life is. Still another has said that … Continue reading TO CONTRIBUTE OR NOT CONTRIBUTE TO LIFE?

THE ART OF BENDING WITHOUT BREAKING

I have an orange tree in my yard. It’s a lesson in life to behold. I watch the miracle of blossoms give birth to oranges. And then I watch the oranges grow larger and larger, heavier and heavier, causing the branches to bend under the increasing weight. Storms come and the winds blow, the boughs swing and sway, the boughs bend and bounce, but the boughs do not break. Those tiny branches have been created to somehow have enough strength to withstand the storms that come and the weight of the oranges and make it through to face another day. … Continue reading THE ART OF BENDING WITHOUT BREAKING
