PARABLE: HOW DO YOU WANT TO BE REMEMBERED? THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EXIST AND USEFUL.

Exist and Useful were twin sisters who grew up in the beautiful town of Life. They had a typical childhood, enjoying the world around them. They attended Opportunity High School where they both received a good education.

The twins had a lot in common, yet they were different. When asked what their goals were, they had very different answers.

Exist’s goals were more inward, more focused on self. She said she simply wanted to enjoy everything she possibly could in life, experience lots of adventure, be free-spirited, not be tied to schedules and deadlines. Serving her own interests were her priorities. She had acquaintances but no close, personal friends. Unfortunately, she never found happiness or purpose in life.

Useful’s goals were more outward, more focused on helping others. She said she wanted to discover ways to contribute to her community, make a difference in the lives of others, show compassion for those in need. Serving others were her priorities. She had many close friendships and was admired by many. Helping others gave her happiness and purpose.

When the twins died, their headstones in Life’s cemetery were side by side.

Exist’s headstone was unremarkable and neglected. There were no flowers. Her inscription read:

“Here lies Exist. That’s all she did.”

Useful’s headstone was groomed and well kept. People regularly brought flowers and remembered her with fondness. Her inscription read:

“Here lies Useful. She was.”

    1. Thanks, Colleen. You and me both. I guess it’s a matter of degrees…..but I need to move more toward the useful end. I will say this, though. Your blogs are something special and useful that you do. Keep writing.
