Early I arose
as dawn kissed the morning dew,
and on my patio with coffee in hand,
I noticed a flash of rainbow lightening,
a glimpse of invisible iridescent wings
darting and diving from flower to flower.
What a treat to start my day,
observing a dancing, dazzling hummingbird
that had fortuitously come my way.
As I watched this wonder of nature,
dozens of words flashed through my mind
that seemed to capture
what I saw the hummingbird doing….
words like darting, dashing, discovering,
and finally drinking a flower’s sweet nectar,
then dashing off to another.
This has the cadence and feel of “‘Twas the night before Christmas”….but is like opening up presents outside watching the hummingbirds.
